At 3:30 on Friday afternoon, November 6, Bishop Boulevard closes to cars. At that hour on most Fridays in University Park, people are heading home, picking up kids, or making a last stop on Hillcrest. On this Friday, the Boulevard will be filling with tailgaters, because Virginia Tech kicks off at Gerald J. Ford Stadium at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN.
SMU's 2026 home schedule has run on Saturdays: UC Davis on September 12, Missouri State on September 26, then Boston College, Virginia and Cal on October 3, 17 and 24. The two home games left both change that pattern. One moves game day onto a weekday. The other carries a Homecoming weekend that SMU moved a full month later in the spring, and SMU has not yet announced its kickoff time. If you live near campus, November 6 through 15 runs on a different schedule from the rest of the season.
The Calendar From Here
The Mustangs play at Syracuse on Halloween, so Halloween weekend is quiet around Ford Stadium. After that, game days come close together.
Date | What's happening | What's confirmed |
|---|---|---|
Fri., Nov. 6 | Virginia Tech at Ford Stadium | 6 p.m. CT kickoff, ESPN |
Thu., Nov. 12 | Distinguished Alumni Awards, Armstrong Fieldhouse | Date and venue |
Fri., Nov. 13 – Sun., Nov. 15 | Homecoming Weekend | Dates per SMU Athletics |
Sat., Nov. 14 | Wake Forest at Ford Stadium, Homecoming game | Kickoff TBD |
SMU's own pages disagree on two dates. The Student Boulevard page lists the Virginia Tech game as November 7, while the official football schedule shows Friday, November 6. Go by the football schedule. The SMU Alumni Homecoming page also lists the weekend as November 12–15, a day longer than the November 13–15 window in the Athletics announcement. The extra day matches the Thursday awards ceremony.
How a Friday Kickoff Runs Into the Workday
SMU sets its Boulevard timing relative to kickoff, not by clock time. For a Saturday 11 a.m. game, that puts everything in the morning. For a 6 p.m. Friday game, the same rules fall across the end of the workday:
- 3 p.m. Registered student groups can begin setting up the Student Boulevard on Dallas Hall Lawn, three hours before kickoff.
- 3:30 p.m. Under SMU's Boulevard rules, the main Boulevard on Bishop closes to vehicles, two and a half hours before kickoff.
- Until 5 p.m. University Park's residential-only parking districts near campus stay in their weekday restriction window. SMU's parking office describes these districts as limited Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to UP residents displaying a city-issued resident or guest permit.
- 6 p.m. Kickoff.
- About 6:30 p.m. The Boulevard reopens to vehicles about 30 minutes after kickoff, or once pedestrian traffic dies down.
On a Friday, that whole sequence overlaps the evening commute. On most Saturdays, the restricted parking window doesn't apply at all, but on November 6 it runs right up to the pregame hours. SMU Athletics' parking page tells fans that Highland Park and University Park both have resident-only areas near campus, that cars without resident or guest permits may be cited by police, and it recommends parking only in designated SMU game-day lots. If friends are joining you on your block for the game, check that they have a guest permit before Friday afternoon.
Homecoming Moved Into November
SMU first planned Homecoming for October 16–18. In April, SMU Athletics announced it was moving the weekend to November 13–15 "to better align with the University's academic calendar and fall break schedule." Family Weekend stayed on its original September 25–27 dates. The move puts Homecoming eight days after the Friday night game, so campus hosts two big events in a little over a week.
SMU's Homecoming announcement and the SMU Alumni Homecoming page list the weekend's traditions. Several of them happen outside the stadium:
- Distinguished Alumni Awards at Armstrong Fieldhouse on Thursday, November 12
- The Homecoming parade, presented by Student Foundation, on the Boulevard three hours before kickoff, along with a float display
- Pigskin Revue, a student pep rally and themed philanthropy competitions
- Reunion and affinity-group tailgates on the Boulevard, plus tents from SMU's schools
- The SMU Alumni Fan Zone on Dallas Hall Lawn near Fondren Library, with food, drinks, games and children's activities
- The Homecoming Court announcement at halftime
None of those times are fixed yet. SMU's February announcement said kickoff times for the Wake Forest game would come later, and the parade and Boulevard schedule are both counted back from kickoff. An 11 a.m. kickoff would mean a parade at 8 a.m. and the Boulevard closed by 8:30. A night kickoff would push all of it into the afternoon. Wait to make Saturday plans for November 14 until the kickoff time is announced.
If you're booking a Boulevard spot for Homecoming, SMU's Boulevard guidelines explain that it assigns tailgate spaces by purchase, and single-game orders for Saturday kickoffs are due by 5 p.m. CT on the Tuesday before. For this game, that's November 10. Only returning full-season guests can set up their own tents. Those tents have to be red, blue or white, fire-retardant, unstaked and inside approved areas, and city permits apply above certain sizes.
Ford Stadium Is Fuller Than Its Listed Capacity
Ford Stadium's stated capacity is 33,200. Last season, average attendance was 33,530, a stadium record, and average student attendance was also a record at 4,186, as The Dallas Morning News reported in September. The 2025 win over Miami was the highest-grossing football game in program history for combined ticket and concession sales. Average crowds now run above the listed capacity, and SMU's 2026 changes put their focus on premium seating and concessions.
SMU deputy athletic director Lauren Adee told The Dallas Morning News that premium areas were the team's top choice "because then we can maximize revenues, and we know that our fans, that's what they wanted." According to that report, the new additions are:
- Three cabanas in the open corners of the stadium, where many fans used to stand and watch away from their seats, now with catering
- Nine loge boxes with access to the Weber End Zone Complex, which opened in 2024
- Wider concourse food from Aramark, including footlong hot dogs, nachos, wings and pizza
- Liquor on the concourse for the first time. SMU has sold beer and wine at football games since 2014.
If you used to watch from those open corners, they're now cabanas.
What hasn't changed at the gate
The clear-bag rule still applies. Bags must be clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and no bigger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches. A one-gallon clear freezer bag, a small clutch, and inspected medical or nursing bags are also allowed, and each guest can bring one sealed, unopened bottle of water. Fans parking on East Campus can take the game-day shuttle, which stops at Energy Square Garage, at SMU Boulevard and the North Central Expressway frontage road, and at Binkley Avenue and Airline Drive.
Your Block on Both Game Days
On both dates, the rules that matter most on your street come from the city. University Park keeps an SMU-area parking district map showing which streets are resident-only, and SMU's parking office links to it directly. Highland Park has a page titled Block Closing/Temporary Resident Only Parking under its Residential Parking Permit Program. Permit details, guest passes and enforcement are set by each city, so this post is general information and not legal advice. Check your own street with University Park or Highland Park before game day.
University Park has also looked at charging for game-day parking near Burleson Park. In August 2025, the city's Park Advisory Committee recommended that City Council try a paid parking pilot for SMU football game days. Staff identified 114 possible spaces on Dublin, Daniel and University and planned to keep 32 spaces on Durham for park users. That was a committee recommendation, and the city's own records are the place to confirm whether the pilot is running. For now, plan on the permit map.
Living a few blocks from Ford Stadium means a Friday night like November 6 now and then, and the buyers and sellers we talk with often ask how game days affect a particular street. If you're thinking about a move near campus and want to know which blocks are busiest on game day and which stay quiet, The Ryan Group knows these streets well. Schedule a free consultation and we'll go over them with you.
